About the project
I do some workouts outside of work and I have been an apple watch user for a couple of years now. Creating the workout on the apple watch was quite a challenge, so I thought, what if we could create the workout on the iPhone too?
Project scope
The project looks at adapting the elements on the watch to the iPhone, but at the same time, creating the components that
are to iOS existing styling.
Studying the app
To start off, I had to study carefully how the screen and functions work on the watch. I took photos of the relevant screens to better aid me in my design.
Adapted Screens
Going by the logic of the watch and how it functions, logically, one can only create and start the workout via the watch. I have also decided to do that for the iPhone. I am not sure how Apple Fitness will change down the road, but for now I am presuming one cannot start a workout via the iPhone and only the watch (except Indoor cycling, it seems, when I tried getting on a bike erg, I could start an ‘indoor cycling’ workout).
UI Elements/Components
Some of the icons and the iOS elements were taken and used from Figma’s Community marketplace. Some other components (such as Activity card buttons) were self-created.
Takeaways
Although this project was a fun personal project, I learnt quite a couple of things.
Tracking of HR
• Thinking about the possibility of starting the workout via the phone, is this feasible? But it will not be able to track the user’s HR (e.g. Nike Run or Strava), unlike the apple watch, where it can detect your HR via your wrist.
• Interaction design / Designing for iOS18
The iOS is always updating every year and in designing some of the components or putting them together, I had to ensure that the interaction works in the way it should, whether it slides in, or does the new screen just change in an ‘instant’? Also, thinking of how the screen on a watch would appear or be displayed on an iPhone (how should the text be arrange in the button, how should it appear, etc).
In doing the project, I researched and found that the middle section of the task bar was meant for users who subscribed to ‘Apple+’ Fitness (and that is where Apple+ button appears, if you are a subscriber to the programme). But for now, it will be interesting to see if Apple will one day implement this functionality of allowing users to create workout from the iPhone and then allow the customised workouts to be updated in the watch for use during the workout.
